About Legal Cost by State

Updated

Legal Cost by State is operated by LeadVera Media, a marketing company that is not a law firm and does not provide legal services.

What the site publishes

Legal Cost by State shows what a legal matter costs, how long it takes and the rules that decide who qualifies, state by state. Its pages are built from researched tables of the 50 states and the District of Columbia: court filing fees, waiting periods, notice periods and hearing deadlines, fee schedules written into statutes, and the eligibility rules behind them. Each table names its sources and the date its rows were checked.

The site is organized in sections, one for each kind of legal problem: Divorce, DUI and Expungement, Bankruptcy, Eviction, Probate and Estate Planning and Tax Debt.

What the site does not do

  • It does not give legal advice. The pages describe general rules and published figures. They do not assess anyone's situation, and they do not predict what a particular matter will cost or how it will turn out.
  • It does not represent anyone, and reading it does not create an attorney-client relationship with anyone.
  • It does not recommend, rank or evaluate any lawyer or firm.
  • It does not fill a gap with a guess. Where the research found no reliable figure, the cell is left blank and says so.

How the site is paid for

LeadVera Media publishes the site and pays for it. The site carries no advertising and no sponsored content. It sets no cookies, loads no advertising, analytics or tracking scripts, and has no form that asks for a name, an email address or a phone number.

LeadVera Media never takes any share of a legal fee or recovery.

How the numbers are built

Every chart is built from one table, researched state by state from statutes, court rules, court fee schedules and government tables, and from national comparison tables, which are labeled as secondary sources. A value that still needs a check against the official source is marked in the table and kept out of the headline figures.

The full rules, the refresh calendar and the coverage of each dataset are on How these numbers are built, and citation lines for each study are on the press page.
